Thai Yoga Stretching

Nuad Boran: passive stretching with therapeutic depth.

Thai yoga stretching, officially called Nuad Boran, is an ancient therapeutic practice that combines elements of Indian Ayurveda, assisted yoga postures, and traditional Chinese medicine.

Unlike most yoga practices where you move through poses yourself, this is a passive floor-based session where the practitioner guides your body through supported stretches, rhythmic pressure, and gentle mobilisation.

Sessions are typically done on a firm mat on the floor, with the recipient fully clothed in comfortable, loose attire and the work held at a slow, attentive pace.

Core principles

Slow, attentive, whole-body work.

  • Sen lines guide the work, with the aim of helping energy move more freely through the body.
  • The session unfolds like a moving meditation, with a slow, rhythmic pace.
  • It works with muscles, joints, fascia, and the nervous system rather than focusing on one area alone.
  • Metta, or loving-kindness, remains part of the intention behind the practice.

Techniques

What the session can include.

Assisted stretching Supported "lazy man's yoga" positions that create deeper opening without requiring active effort from the receiver.
Compression Rhythmic palm and thumb pressure along the body to warm tissue and support circulation.
Joint mobilisation Gentle rocking and circular movement to encourage more ease through the hips, shoulders, and spine.
Acupressure Steady pressure on specific points to help release deeper-held tension.
